Clancy Brown Hello, my name is Clancy Brown. I am a philosopher major and a freshman. I am taking this class because I am really interested in ethical dilemmas. I feel like the world today is full of grey areas where we don’t really know what’s right or who to believe. Understanding how we actually perceive ethics is an crucial step in breaking through a lot of that noise. I also think that ethics is an important topic in a world where technology and reactionary politics seem to have taken center stage. It worries me that so much of the world’s processes are simply beyond our scope of understanding. My expectations for this class is that we will study and discuss a wide range of ethical theories. I feel like I don’t know very much going into this, and I am excited to learn more. An interesting fact about me is that I am trying to teach myself how to make websites. There is this webhosting platform called Neocities that lets you create your own websites the good old fashion way, by coding it directly. I think that I might make a website where I can store all the weird stuff that I find on the internet and share it with other people. |

Elijah Ashberry Hello class, my name is Elijah. I am really excited for the semester ahead of us! I am a psychology major and a philosophy minor. I am taking this class because my advisor said it was a requirement and when I tried to ask him if I could sub it in for another class he ended the zoom call and never responded to my emails. I am a junior! I love to read and play boardgames. I’ve recently been getting into the The Wheel of Time series. I’m four books in and the story is really starting to pick up! My expectations for this course is that for the next few days I will camp outside my advisor’s office and when I see him I will ask him again if I can sub in another class and he probably won’t do it at first but I’ll wear him down. An interesting fact about me is that I am allergic to raspberries, strawberries, and Tapioca. |

Julian Miglan Hello :-) my name is Julain. I am a computer science and philosophy major. I am a freshman, and this is one the first courses I have taken here at HCU. I am taking this course because ethical theory is fascinating to me, and I would love to learn more about it. I ready the course syllabus to get an idea on the sort of theories that we will be studying in this course, and I am happy to see that one of the contemporary philosophers is Singer. I read a bit of Animal Liberation over the Summer, and I found his perspective to be very interesting. I’ve also read The Republic, but it was a little while ago and I am very willing to revisit it. Plato can never get old imo. My expectations for this course is that we shall be discussing how these philosophers argue their positions and project those arguments onto modern moral issues. One issue that I am really excited to discuss in class is the that of A.I. and how it interacts with our philosophical understanding of what makes us people. Can a machine have morality? I am of the perspective that they do not, but I am interested to see what everyone else thinks. An interesting fact about me is that I have poliosis, which is a rare condition that causes a patch of my hair to be white. You probably noticed it on Monday. I was a little self-conscious of it at first but then I came to respect it as a part of my identity. Self-actualization is about respecting every part of you. |

Trevor Haidenson Hey, I’m Trevor. I’m an International Business major and I’ll be graduating this December. I’m taking this class because I wanted to. I though it sounded neat and I like reading books that make me think. My expectations for this class is that it will be fun and easy. There is only like three exams which means I won’t have to study or anything. An interesting fact about myself is that I love cheesecake to a detrimental degree. |
